Bio:

I was born in Reims, France, in 1965. In 1975, my family moved to Barcelona, Spain, where I studied at the Lycée Français de Barcelone. At the age of fifteen, while my family remained in Spain, I chose to study abroad with the intention of pursuing photography at an American university.

After spending two years at Worcester Academy in Massachusetts, I received my high school diploma in 1983. The following year, I enrolled at Hofstra University in Long Island, New York, to study civil engineering.

In 1984, returning to my original ambition, I applied to the Parsons School of Design in New York, where I graduated in 1989 with a BFA in Photography. In 1991, I continued my studies in Industrial Design at the Istituto Europeo di Design in Milan.

In 1992, I was awarded a scholarship to attend the Rhode Island School of Design, where I pursued the Master of Landscape Architecture program.

After living for more than twenty years in Spain, I am now based in the French countryside near the Loire Valley. My work has been exhibited internationally for over two decades.

About the work:

During my studies at Parsons in New York, encouraged by the late fashion photographer Lillian Bassman, I began an experimental approach to photography. At the time, I was deeply fascinated by Mondrian’s Trees at MoMA—a series in which he moves away from representation toward abstraction. Inspired by this shift, I pursued a similar path. I spray-painted an egg blue and photographed it against a monochrome red background. As I played with focus, the light began to diffuse, and the image gradually transformed into a blue spot surrounded by a halo of light. Suddenly, the work was no longer about individual colors, but about their interaction with one another.

At the same time, I began an internship at Metro Pictures Gallery and moved to Ludlow Street. Immersed in the New York art scene of the 1980s, with access to space and two roommates who were fine arts students working with wood and metal, I started making sculptural pieces.

Later, while studying Landscape Architecture at RISD, minimalist artists of the 1960s—such as Carl André, Donald Judd, and Sol LeWitt—became important references. I admired their theoretical rigor and their redefinition of sculpture: not as an autonomous object, but as an object in space.

Photography captures images to freeze them in time; sculpture assembles materials to create volumes in space. The intersection of these two disciplines became the foundation of my research. My work presents abstract images mounted on hand-crafted wooden structures. These pieces are not intended to exist solely on a wall; they are conceived to inhabit space.

The fabrication of the structures is precise, meticulous, time-consuming, and conceptual, while the creation of the images is spontaneous and intuitive. I photograph layers of paper arranged on the ground, then alter and transform the collage at random, capturing moments of the unexpected. I consider this practice a crossover between the street photographer’s search for the “decisive moment,” as described by Cartier-Bresson, and the abstract impressionists’ spontaneous, automatic, and subconscious approach to creation.

In parallel with my sculptural abstract work, I explore photography taking pictures of the everyday, images that find their place laid out in books along some nonsense words.
